Is QLab any good?  Well, we think it's pretty cool.

But don't take our word for it—here's what other folks are saying:

Many congratulations—I really do think this is one of the best new pieces of theatre sound software I've seen in many years.

"Re-programming during tech rehearsals is fast and easy. I can give our director many options and quickly shift between them. QLab is now our official playback system and will be in use from now on. Our freelance designer was very grateful for your feedback and I was happy enough to take on the next show (without reading the manual!). The whole show was built and recorded in about four hours and as I am using Protools LE, the sound files never leave the Mac! Drag and drop rules!

Our sound ops are very happy and have taken to QLab very well. Everyone agrees it is by far the easiest system they have used. Thanks again."

I recently toured in the Ukraine with Philadelphia's Pig Iron Theater Company.

This is the program I've been dreaming of since I first bought [a commonly used PC program] and started cursing at it. It worked flawlessly. Too well, in fact. I was finished with the sound setup a full day early and was then drafted into helping the lighting crew catch up.

We were able to make consistent, repeatable adjustments to the show.

This program makes sense. Thank you so much for building it. You've made a real progressive contribution to sound design.

Right now we have four tours going around with QLab. Next week show number 500 is coming up and there have been no bugs or crashes! QLab is perfect for our use. Keep up the fantastic work!

I would like you to know how much I love QLab. It does a fantastic job and never misses a beat, very important when using something professionally on stage. As a Stage Hypnotist timing is everything and QLab never fails for me. It is also very easy for anyone to operate. I have tried many other solutions and it is by far the best.

Thanks so much.

I have used everything from CDs and MiniDiscs to Instant Replays and [a popular PC program] for playback. I want to let you know that yours is definitely the easiest to use. There has been times when the director has asked for a change in a sound cue during tech. In five minutes I was able to change the mix in Pro Tools on my Powerbook, bounce it, add it to a flash drive and transfer it to QLab. The sound cue was already changed even before the director finished re-blocking the actors. The director was shocked to hear the change in that amount of time. This never would have happened if we were still using CDs or another type of media. I've used it on over 140 performances and we have had no crashes or complications. QLab has also allowed me to take a basic Analog Mackie Board and create Surround Sound Panning Flawlessly. I just wanted to thank you for your work on QLab and making my job easier today then when I began designing six years ago.

I am a professional sound designer and engineer. I have been working in sound for theater for close to six years. Nothing I have come across has come close to the user interface you guys have created. You have taken everything that makes Macs great for our business and seamlessly created an all-in-one toolbox for sound designers. I am currently using QLab for Metamorphosis and at a week before tech I am 90% finished with the entire design. This would not be possible without your software. I have encouraged every theater I work with to get their hands on a copy of QLab. Keep up the good work and thanks for everything. Customer service has been great.

Wow. That is really all I can say. I have never been so impressed with a new sound cuing program in my life. I have used [an alternate PC program] and [another popular PC program] for years and loved them both but being a "Mac guy" I was really excited to hear that someone had finally created a cueing program for the Apple platform. I am currently using it as the primary program for a show at Infernal Bridegroom Productions here in Houston and just cannot say enough good things about it.

I'm halfway through the tech rehearsal process at a LORT B theatre right now, which uses a major computer-based sound effect playback system on the windows platform. It's the first time since I started using QLab that I've had to use a different system, and I have to say the difference is staggering. Plainly put, QLab is superior to this other software package by an order of magnitude. Programming a cue in this system requires mental acrobatics and clever tricks with combinations of mono and stereo files just to get sounds playing of the correct speakers... With QLab, I don't have to deal with anything like that, I just design my show.

Congrats yet again on getting it right.

... I found myself with the SITI Company getting ready to remount a production of our War of the Worlds Radio Play, ... and as an experiment due to pulling the show out of the moth balls of Mini Disc land and not having a PC-driven rig on site here, I decided to give QLab a try.

I loaded the sound design of War of The Worlds Radio Play from the Mini Disc archives into QLab to recreate the design and I just wanted to give you a shout saying you saved my ass here in upstate New York with the program. I can't believe even now how intuitive it was to master.

I've been an avid user of [another program] for the last few years and I have now officially road tested QLab under the demands of a very cue-heavy SITI Company piece and QLab ran rock solid for the run of the show here, and frankly it's amazing.

... [QLab] is changing how I'm thinking about not only how to incorporate it into the next year of my work, but also doing as I did with the War of The Worlds sound design incorporating it into the SITI touring system and transferring everything in the SITI repertory into QLab for the road.

So, in short, this is basically a letter of encouragement and endorsement ... what you are doing is important and it does make a difference. And as for this Mac sound design head, I'm loving it and it's being used out here in demanding situations and is kicking ass.

We closed the show here just a few days ago and the first thing even before sitting down to write this to you was to send an email to many of my fellow designers begging them to check QLab out. I'm feeling like this could be as important to what we do and our careers as the invention of the sampler, and no I'm not kidding.

"We're in the middle of tech for the new musical "Sidd" at Dodger Stages. Your system is great! I programmed the show in the middle of a 10 out of 12 without reading the "Help" and it's worked perfectly ever since."

"...Three words, drag and drop! Content acquisition traditionally has been a long and torturous process that held up rehearsals and frustrated producers. QLab has changed everything. I was able to import, organize and label the majority of the show in the time it would normally take to record a couple of selections on the Instant Replay.

Although I was impressed with the platform already, the beginning of rehearsal is when the real magic began. Music content that hadn't been selected at the start of the rehearsal was decided on during the rehearsal. In the past we would have had to skip past that, take notes and spend time later on importing that material. With QLab I could immediately take in the new content in any format they wanted to throw at me and have it show-ready in a matter of seconds. Now that's instant replay! CD, memory stick, email, network, I was able to pick up content from any format without problem or delay. The client was so impressed with the ability of the technology to keep up with the dynamics of an evolving show.

Multi-track playback, complex start, stop and fade capabilities, cue stacking, as well as easy head and tail trim open up playback possibilities that previously were unthinkable. It's funny, this was far and away the most complex show I've done this year. However, it never felt out of control because I was able to stay in front of it. QLab is what made this possible. I was able to quickly set up the show and then continually adapt to the changing requirements without any problem. Thank you for such a valuable product."

I just wanted to drop you a line and thank you for QLab. ... I had looked for sound cue software before, both for the Mac and the PC but never found anything that looked like it would work how I wanted, and had been thinking over the past few years about coding something myself but to my amazement, when I did a Google, I found this gift called "QLab". One quick download, and an hour or two later I had our entire show transferred and ready to go, all without looking at any instruction. Even more impressive is that it runs spectacularly on my old TiBook 400 that I'd been trying to find a use for. I haven't been so impressed with a piece of software that "just works" since my first experience with iMovie many years ago. There are at least two other theatres in town who likely are going to be implementing QLab in some form. We're all very impressed. I keep trying QLab on older hardware as well as I run across it and so far, it even works on an G3 333mhz Powerbook that was recently given to me.

This is an amazing application, exactly what I've been desperately looking for so I could run my shows from my Mac. As Resident Sound Designer at Playhouse on the Square in Memphis TN, I design 18 shows a year and up until now have been struggling with [a different Mac program], CD players, or MiniDiscs. Thank you so much for taking the time to put this together. It has made my life infinitely easier. I was beginning to think that the only real solution to pro theatre sound was [a popular PC program], but there was no way I was going to trust Windows to run my shows. This is brilliant!

"I discovered QLab when I was looking for alternatives to [another program] - I needed something simple and effective that could play back cues with no fuss. I have to say, having now used QLab all the way through tech and into the run, I don't know how on earth I could have worked without it. Since the professional faculty sound designers prefer to bring in their own equipment for their shows, I do have some experience with [that other program], and I have to say I like QLab better - It's simpler, more streamlined and has virtually no learning curve. I also have to say that the price of QLab makes it the absolute perfect tool for student sound designers - I already spent my money on the pro tools system, and because sound design isn't an official major, I don't get a design budget.

During the last part of tech, for the dress rehearsals without the benefit of the tech tables in the house, I was unsure how I was going to continue adjusting levels throughout the show, without running back and forth to the booth. A (relatively) simple solution presented itself, after a little thought. The operator created an ad-hoc wifi network from his PowerBook, and started a VNC server. I joined his network, fired up my VNC viewer and had full control over QLab from his machine - all without leaving the comfort of my seat mid-house. Technology, for once, made things a lot simpler. In the future, we may even start using MIDI to drive the lighting console - technological convergence of this nature is rare at this university, but thanks to software like QLab, it's made that much more accessible.

So thanks so very much for creating this - it made my life and the life of my show a thousand times easier. I hope you continue to make this great software better."

I want to thank you for creating this software. I'm a high school junior, soon to be a new senior, and I do a lot of sound design for our theater. We've been using CD's for the past few years, but QLab has enabled us to jump to computers. It's just an incredible program, and for mac, too! I would not have been able to finish the design without QLab. Everything was so simple to program, fades, stop cues.

Really, I just wanted to say thanks for developing this. It's amazing, and it has saved me on numerous occasions from all-nighters. Editing on the fly, working with Logic concurrently, it's all so simple and intuitive.

I just wanted to thank you for your wonderful software. Without QLab I would have had to run from source to source, praying that the CD spun up correctly, or else porting everything into a mini disk, spending hours loading everything in and naming tracks, all the while praying that nothing would change the order.

With QLab I was able to create the entire show on my laptop in about 2 hours. It was amazingly easy for any edits the director wanted [...]

A word on reliability: I ran the show off my personal laptop (700mhz iBook G3) that is on its last legs. It has trouble sending email, it has decided that anything made by Microsoft will crash, and generally is not a reliable computer. The closest I came to a malfunction was when I pressed the space bar not realizing the finder was active, instead of QLab. Amazing!

Just thought I'd let you know, your program rocks. I've run SFX for a few shows now using QLab. NO CRASHES! I ran a show with full L/R/LS/RS (surround) backing tracks with X-fading, for 13 performances. Still NO CRASHES! That's running it on a old 550MHZ G4 Powerbook. 512 Mb of ram. Using a M-Audio I/O I ran my Macbook Pro as a back up for a few shows, but now I don't so much. [I'm] loving the speed of updates at the moment.

Thanks again.

Thank you so much for making this incredible program.

I was assigned a One Act play this year that I dubbed "The Death Play" for having so many sound effects one after another.

After thinking there must be a better way than loading CDs, I found QLab one night while searching the Internet. Within an hour I had everything programmed to perfection. I love how you can set levels right in the program, it makes it incredibly easy to move to a new stage; set one level on the board and you're done!

Thanks to QLab, I won "Best Use of Technology" at the provincial One Act competition and stunned some of the Senior sound engineers at the theatre we were at!

Best of all, it is truly school-friendly with a price like free.

Thank you so much QLab, you saved the day!
